Garage Door Security Tips

Did you know that garage doors are one of the first places that thieves look to break into homes? Your garage door could make it easy for a burglar to get into your home in just seconds, but fortunately there are a few things you can do to make your garage doors in Perth more secure and to deter potential thieves from trying to break into your home.

Make It Harder for Thieves to Go Fishing

A lot of thieves gain access to people’s homes by fishing a wire or coat hanger between the top of the door and its seal. They’ll then hook the emergency release catch for the garage door opener so that they can simply lift the door when it releases. You can make this more difficult by hanging curtains or otherwise covering your garage door’s windows so that the thief can’t see what they’re doing.

You can also make it harder by choosing a garage door opener with an emergency release that must be pulled straight down and not at an angle, and/or by improving the seal between the top of your garage door and the doorframe.

Upgrade Your Garage Door Opener System

A lot of times, homes are made vulnerable when people forget to close their garage doors when they leave. If you upgrade your garage door opener system, you can get one that will automatically close after a given period of time, or one that you can control with your smartphone from wherever you happen to be. So, if you think you forgot to close the garage door, you can check your phone and close it with no problem.

Lock the Track When You’re Away from Home

Most garage doors in Perth have a latch on one or both tracks that allows you to manually lock the door and prevent someone from lifting it, even if they override your garage door opener. Even if your garage door doesn’t have a latch, you can drill a hole in the track and put a large padlock through it.

While this isn’t the ideal solution when you want the convenience of opening and closing your garage door remotely, it’s a great thing to do when you go out of town for a few days on vacation or on a business trip. That way, if thieves have been watching your house and waiting for you to leave for an extended amount of time, they won’t be able to get in.

With these tips, you can instantly improve your home’s security by improving your garage doors. As a Perth resident, you’ll appreciate the peace of mind that comes with knowing that thieves can’t get into your home.
