How to Maintain Your Garage Door

How to Maintain Your Garage Door

Every day, garage doors in Perth open and shut for us, and we don’t think anything of it. When we hit the button on our garage door openers, we expect our garage doors to open, and we expect them to close when we hit that button again. We rely on our garage doors to safely stay open when we need them to and to close securely to keep predators out of our homes.

A lot of us take our garage doors for granted, but it’s important to know that even the newest garage door needs at least a little bit of regular maintenance to continue to work properly and to avoid failure.

Fortunately, keeping your garage doors in tip-top shape really isn’t difficult or complicated at all. In fact, it all boils down to just three easy types of maintenance: cleaning, safety, and lubrication.

Over time, sun exposure and exposure to the elements can break down the exteriors of garage doors in Perth. For the most part, this is more of a cosmetic issue than a functional one, but if your garage door goes uncleaned for long enough, it can become a structural issue and a problem for your home’s security.

To keep your garage door looking great and functioning properly to keep thieves and other predators out, mix warm water and detergent in a bucket. Then wipe the whole door down with a soft brush or sponge and spray it clean with a hose.

If you have a wooden garage door, you should take this opportunity to look for flaking paint, cracks, and/or dry rot. Wood swells and shrinks over time, and it’s more susceptible to exposure than sheet metal, so if you’re noticing damage you might want to consider replacing your garage door with a metal one.

Every two to three months, you should perform a safety check on your garage doors to ensure that they’re functioning properly and safely. If you notice anything wrong, like the door catching on the track or a spring that looks like it’s starting to wear, call a professional to service your door for you.

Remember, your garage’s torsion springs are under a really heavy load, and replacing them can be dangerous if you don’t know exactly what you’re doing. So don’t hesitate to call your local Perth garage door experts if you see anything amiss in your safety inspection.

But what are you looking for in your inspection? Make sure that all bolts and screws are tight and that your garage door moves evenly and smoothly along its tracks. Make sure that the hinges are held tightly in place and that they open and close freely. If you notice a bolt that’s painted red or has a warning on it, pay special attention to it but always call a professional if there’s something wrong, as this is a bolt that holds a part of the garage door under high tension.

Using a non-silicone-based lubricant, every few months you’ll want to lubricate your garage door’s hinges, bearings, and springs. You can also lubricate metal rollers but don’t let any lubricant come in contact with your rollers if they’re nylon. And don’t let any lubricant touch the tracks, as it can cause the door to slip, which is definitely unsafe.

Just do these three things whenever they’re needed (once or twice a year for cleaning, every two to three months for safety checks and lubrication), and you’ll be on your way to having a well-maintained garage door in Perth for years to come. And call on us at North West Shed Masters for all of your professional garage door installation and maintenance needs.
